Hi Chris,
 For the last several years I made half hearted attempts to plant cover crops 
in the fall, after all the summer things were harvested. Problem was, by sowing 
that late in the summer and fall, sometimes the cover crop didn't have time to 
grow and spread before cold weather. So last year, I started intercropping as 
you describe and it worked beautifully. I went to the local feed/seed store and 
bought what they had on hand: hairy vetch, crimson clover, rye and buckwheat. I 
sowed them before planting in the spring, I sowed them during the summer and 
again as things came out and space was freed, then planted second crops right 
in the greeness where I needed to, and simply let the rest remain undisturbed. 
My soil is much improved this spring, as I found out today while turning over 
those green manure crops in anticipation of planting soon. Lots and lots of 
worms, rich, loose and light- the green manures certainly helped (along with 
liberal amounts of compost,
 manures, rotted straw and rock powders too, but that's another story for 
another day)
