Diann,

We have a moringa tree at Orange Blossom Community Garden in Sarasota, Florida,
courtesy of one of our gardeners who is of Burmese descent.? Ours is the Asian
variety as opposed to the African tree.? Richard, our gardener, is a chef and
uses the leaves and the long seed or bean pod (you'll find them labeled as
drumsticks in Asian markets) in delightful dishes that he prepares for work
days and potlucks at the garden.

You can find extensive information on the tree from Echo located in North Fort
Myers, Florida.? Sorry, I don't have their web address handy, but you can
google Echo.? We are fortunate to have such a research and teaching facility
located nearby.

Barbara

Subject: [Community_garden] Miracle Tree

Hi all,

I've been getting information about this Moringa Tree which is being touted
as a Miracle Tree for the fact that it has so many positive attributes.
Almost all parts of it are edible. It has an immune boosting property. It is
being planted by the millions by various church groups in Africa to help the
people devastated by HIV/AIDS and starvation. The leaves can be dried and
added to polluted water and it settles the particulates in there to make
water more potable.

Does anyone know if it survives cold weather? Could it be grown in Northeast
Georgia for example? Is it invasive?

Check out this website for your own information.

For those who are interested in Permaculture, this tree has been being used
at ECHO (a Christian center in mid-Florida which uses advanced research and
techniques to overcome hunger in 3rd world nations) in many types of
climates. It has multiple functions which work beautifully in "food forest"
types of applications as well as good cut and drop applications in rows to
hold soil and grow on steep property.

Anyone out there with information first hand on this would be greatly
appreciated.

Diann Dirks
