Hi, everyone.  I just did a search about the PLU codes.  I am not sure if the
information about 3 or 4's are correct.

I found out that the PLU (produce look up code) orginated from the
International Federation for Produce Standard.
http://www.plucodes.com/Default.aspx

On page 7 of the PLU Codes User Guide, it stated that only three codes have
been allocated:
0 Applies to all non-qualified produce and is generally presented without the
leading
"zero" digit.
8 Genetically modified
9 Organic
http://www.plucodes.com/docs/IFPS-plu_codes_users_guide.pdf
So I am not sure where the 3 or 4's come in.  Most of the codes range from 3000
to 4000.  There are over 1300 PLU's.  Check out FAQ section:

Subject: [Community_garden] Market codes for irradiated, GMO, organic or
regular produce
To: [email protected]

Hi,

I've been looking for a way to determine the quality and safety of food in
the produce aisle at the market by means of whether it is irradiated,
genetically modified (GMO), organic or plain. I saw this on one of my list
servs and thought it would be very helpful to you and your health to know
this. Even health food stores are not immune to selling irradiated food as
you can see below. But otherwise, it's also a way to comment to your grocer
that you will not buy irradiated or GMO food. (Whether you will buy plainly
grown is up to you of course but I would advise against the other two).

If we don't take the position of "I'm a consumer and I determine
where my
money goes" then there will be no pressure on the markets to be upfront
with
their products.

Hope this helps, Love, Diann Dirks

Codes on Market Produce

Fresh fruits and veggies are marked with a number code that reveals what
kind of produce you are buying.

If there is a 5 digit code starting in 9 it is organic.

If there is a 5 digit code starting in 8 it is genetically modified.
If there is a 4 digit code starting in 4 it is conventional.
If there is a 4 digit code starting in 3 it is irradiated.

A couple days ago at Whole Foods they had a beautiful shipment of large
colorful "Fresh Rain Forest Grapes." The code was 4 digits starting
in 3 -
they were irradiated. I would have bought them not knowing this info.
