Interesting.  How do we collect that info?  I wonder if we can really do it
objectively?  I am sure most of the gardeners, organizers, youth who
participate in the project, and may be nearby residents,  will answer
positively to some of these questions.

However, at the same time I wonder... Do we hold the same standards to
the developers?  Do/Did they really create more jobs, or make the living
environment better for the residents, stimulate the economy, bring fresh food
to the neighborhood, create more affordable housing, improve living standards
for a community and etc?  Is it the best use of land to hand it to the
developers?

Thank you for all the outstanding information offered. I am putting together
a cross-section of research on community gardening and was hoping others
would be willing to help provide some information. The main topic I am
interested in is the process of evaluation for urban gardens. How are we
evaluating? What are we evaluating? Topics specifically interested include
educational programs, how we affect food security, difference in health,
environmental aspects, and what is the significant change in the community.

How are we measuring youth programs to insure they are gaining the knowledge
to become the future urban gardeners?

Do educational workshops really reach community members? Are we providing
information that can be used in our community?

Are we helping families feel more economically secure by being able to pick
their own food from a garden at a much lower cost than the markets?

Do we really feel healthier after exercising in the fresh air and sunshine?
Is there an advantage to growing our own vegetables over the store bought
vegetables?

Is an urban community garden the best use of land in an already populated
community?

Do we encourage a feeling of community?

Do we see community members coming together more than they would without a
community garden?

Is there a sense of ownership in your community?

I am sure we all have individual answers to these questions but how do we
have these answers? Where do we get this information?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
