Dear Scott,
Acid loving plants such as okra, blueberries, etc. would be fine. However, I
suggest you do a google search on sheet mulching (also known as lasagna
gardening) and build a soil bed where anything can grow. That way you don't
have to do much more soil tilling, and you control what you put in it.

Hello all,
My parents have just had a giant Blue Spruce removed from their back
yard (yes, I'm sad to see it go, I grew up in its branches...), and
they want to use part of the newly available space to plant a garden.
The process of digging up the roots has mixed up the soil fairly well,
and we have a good pile of compost to add to it, but we're concerned
that the soil will be too acidic from the spruce needles and that the
soil in general will be fairly low quality.
So, I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for vegetables or edible
plants that would be:
+ok with spruce soil
+fairly hardy
+can be planted in the next week or so in Calgary
+could potentially improve the soil (ie. nitrogen fixing)
My dad is thinking potatoes, but there's a lot of space so it would be
nice to mix things up. :)
