Hi all:
I didn't realize that Diann's suggestion was sent to me off-list. Here it is, shared with her permission: Ordinary building lumber, un-pressure-treated, if treated with a combination of linseed oil, turpentine and bees wax is quite effective I'm told. Use 2x12's. I have used ordinary wood and had it last for over 6 years without treatment of any kind so using the oil, etc. above is even better. Make sure you treat all sides of it. Melt the bees wax in the turpentine and linseed oil. I would see if I could find this on the internet. I don't know the ratio, but I would imagine the most heavily used ingredient would be the linseed oil. Or you can just use the linseed oil alone, rolled on with a roller. I would use two coats and let it dry well between. We aren't as fancy in our garden using painted particle board. It's our first year with this treatment so it is undetermined how long they will last. But since they were $.75 a board, and the paint was free, who cares?! :) Good luck.
