Fellow Gardeners,
I
am looking for a clear efficacy argument for community gardens that I
saw on a New York City community garden website. Apparently when my computer
crashed it got
lost or relocated it inside its memory. Essentially what I remember of
the article was that the total costs to the city of New York were
compared to other costs ongoing within the same community at the same time. For
example;
Policing costs go down in neighbourhoods with community gardens,
less
tagging & graffitti clean up, and repairs from vandalism so
insurance rates go down, property values go up so the tax base
supporting the community improves, community services and their
programs linked to gardens are cheaper to run if part of the time is in
the garden, citizens tend to maintain areas around the gardens so city
work crews spend less time, the social fabric of the community tends
not to encourage crime so less jail, court, rehab and social services
costs etc.
Anyway,
the point I am looking for was that this article claimed that there
were hard numbers showing that for the millions spent millions more
than that were saved. Perhaps you can put me in touch with the author
of this research or a copy of the article? In the mean time is there any way we
in London
Ontario Canada can help you?
