A suggestion about soil:
Soil is an environment full of life, providing air, water, and nutrients with the help of that life to the plants that grow in it. Check out the Soil Food Web site at: www.soilfoodweb.com/sfi_approach1.html for an explanation, or just look at the soil for yourself. Beating it into a talc-like substance will destroy it.
