I have used wood chips, pecan shells, etc in the paths between the beds. Great. I have wood chips [delivered free] under a tree. I see no reason not to use them for mulch under trees. I think a better thing to use is a perennial legume cover crop. Chips are very, v,v,v slow to break down unless N is added. Not in the vegetable beds.
