Hello fellow gardeners,

My name is Jennifer and I'm currently working on my master's thesis research
on heavy metals and gardens, using San Francisco as a case Study. I have
just launched a website that outlines basic information on heavy metals and
gardens, including everything from doing your own soil sampling for
testing, finding a lab to test the soil, safe levels, and down-loadable
pamphlets translated into Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese. The
results of my research is also on the site, and includes maps that show the
levels of metals that were found in each garden alongside income and
race/ethnicity data, and tables that show the relationship between the
concentrations of the metals and various factors (raised beds vs. in-ground
gardens, home age, zip code, etc.). You can go directly to the site from
this link: https://sites.google.com/site/healthygardeners/, or if you would
like to skip right to the results, go to the page entitled San Francisco: A
Case
Study<https://sites.google.com/site/healthygardeners/san-francisco-project>.

The project included backyard, community and school gardens. I'm still
analyzing the results of the study and so do not have everything up on the
website yet, but will update it when the thesis is complete. Expect to see
an analysis of community vs. backyard gardens, which will likely show that
community gardens tend to have less metals than backyard gardens.

Please feel free to pass the link on to other gardening organizations that
you think might be interested.

Cheers,
-jennifer
