Organic matter is the key to perfect soil.  To have it do three things:

1. Add OM

2. Add OM

3. Add OM

It does not have to be composted. Never till it into the soil; leave on
top.  I taught a gardening workshop in Longview TX last weekend and taught
that over and over in some form.  Grow it or bring it in.  Takes three
years of doing it and then you will few, if any, diseases, insects, etc.
 Ruth Stout says use 12 inches.
