To address Ray's issue of accessible beds, we have tried to build our
community garden to be accessible by all. We could not find any ADA
regulations for gardens, but there are some suggestions. Our garden is
broken up into quadrants. One quadrant has some very low beds with wood
chip walkways that are easily accessible to children. One quadrant has
crushed compacted gravel that is easier for people in walkers, scooters or
wheel chairs. This quadrant also has beds built at 33 inches high so they
can be accessed by someone in a sitting position or a standing position with
very little bending required. Two beds in this quadrant are built "table"
style so that a wheel chair can roll up close to the bed. Each garden has
to look at who is likely to access their garden and build accordingly.
