I have started on CE with compass + SASS ( blueprint ) and recreating the theme, cleaning out a lot of stuff not needed, refactoring code sections although I have had a hard time with the haml and have stopped this transition for now since there are some essential features I still miss in CE like full groups support ( forums for groups, etc ) This work is in the staters so not really anything usefull to share.
Also I have thought about a better UI looking at several popular community based portal sites (not facebook.com) to copy serveral layout ideas from there, they are good inspiration. Although for my personal usage im very interested in CE and continue to keep looking at it, for now this is a side project for spare personal time. I think the templating could be redone much cleaner, making more usage of helpers to create blocks of code there is a lot of double functionality in the views they could be much dryer, it can be done but it would take a haml + sass guru to really do this fast, else its a considerable work. If anyone has anything interesting going on with the CE templates please let it know, im willing to work on something only hold back now because it takes to much time to do alone, maybe start a github project for a better CE template bruno and let several of us including hopefully yourself work on a cleaner theme. Cleaning up the CE code and solidfy and improve quality of current features would be good anyway. CE has lots of potential.
