FYI, I did resolve most of this -- apparently getexceptional was
effectively down for 24-48 hours.  during which time any settings
changes i tried to make weren't sticking.  not sure if its failure to
install via a gem was related to this, but since it's working with the
plugin install i'm not going to mess with it.
