Hmm... spoke too soon. Looks like acl9 only handles authorization, not authentication, and the README claims it works well with Authlogic. So if you're really just substituting for CE's built in Role system, it might be easy. You'll just have to make sure the existing CE methods (like .admin? or .moderator?) still work.
