That link doesn't work for me. Perhaps the spammer was brought to justice? I'm going to presume that you would like to reboot that discussion you referenced, so I will give you my 2c.
I, for one, do not like Captcha style solutions. I find them to be inconvenient to users at best and blocking at worst. At http://dealush.com we have disabled anon comments for the time being as we were getting too much spam. We occasionally get spammers signing up, but this has yet to happen en masse. I think an effective technique is going to have to involve both software and meatware based solutions. I like the following ideas: -Moderator flagging of comments as spam. To make this really effective it would be good to have a bulk review screen where comments can be reviewed en mass; Akismet could be rolled into this; -Regular users flagging of comments as spam, which pushes the comments to the top of the queue to be reviewed, maybe with an option of admin or moderators getting an email to review it. If multiple regular users mark it as spam, then comment is hidden until review; -Have a maximum comment rate per IP address/user as a config option. i.e. a user can only post a new comment ever 30 seconds; Any other ideas out there? We will probably be implementing these features sometime soon, so I am interested in hearing if anyone else has done something similar. On a related note, when we make these changes, ideally we'd like to contribute back to CE, but have to work out the best way to get the changes in as we have customised CE up the wazoo. As it stands it would be a large task to get all of our changes in a state where they could be merged into CE edge, and a lot of our changes would not be desirable for a generic project like CE. Cheers, James.
