Ahh, that was my fear too after digging into it a bit. The user models are quite different but of course most of the columns are semantically equivalent, just with different names. So I totally get your rant about a unified user/group/role model.
One thing I did think about. CE is mostly about contributions from non-privileged users and I'll definitely want to extend it with a lot of additional types and so on to do what I need. Refinery, seems to me, is more about a small group of content authors putting up content for general viewing in a mostly non-interactive way... Yeah, maybe you have comments and stuff, but it's mostly publishing. So in fact if you could simply unify the user store with authlogic + LDAP or something and run the two apps themselves as separate servers, it might actually work. Anyway, many thanks for the advice. Hopefully I'll be able to get something workable and loosely coupled together, will let everyone here know if it works out.
