The University of Magdeburg offers a 3-years postdoc position to study single
cell recordings in humans, performed in epileptic patients for curative surgery.

The project will investigate concept cells (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston neurons) –
that means, neurons in the hippocampus and surrounding areas that selectively
fire to specific concepts, like different pictures and the written or spoken
name of a particular person (e.g. Quian Quiroga et al, Nature 2005; Quian
Quiroga, Cell 2019), which are involved in declarative memory functions. For
more details see:

The successful candidate will contribute to performing recordings with patients
and the analysis of the data to investigate the role of these neurons in
memory. The candidate should have very good quantitative skills (data
processing, and programing e.g. in Matlab) and a strong background or interest
in neuroscience. The candidate should be able to work both independently and as
part of a research team.

The candidate will be primarily based at the Department of Neurology in
Magdeburg (http://www.kneu.ovgu.de) and will work in close collaboration with
the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (https://www.lin-magdeburg.org) and the
Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Centre (https://www.dzne.de/en/) at the
University of Magdeburg, and with the recently established group of Rodrigo
Quian Quiroga at the IMIM (https://www.imim.cat), in Barcelona.

The position is initially offered for 3 years, with the possibility of further
extensions according to performance. Salary will be competitive, based on DFG
(German Research Council guidelines for Postdocs), depending on experience.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Prof. Catherine
Sweeney-Reed: [email protected].

To apply, please send a curriculum vitae and a brief description of scientific
interests to Mrs. Birgit Boehme at [email protected].

The closing date for the applications is 24th February 2023.

Start date will be in April 2023 or shortly thereafter.
