My project for next week: Setting up and using a 68000-based Mac that has 4 MB of RAM, with or without a hard drive. Primary focus: Plus, SE, Classic Secondary focus: Portable, PowerBook 100 Issues to be covered, order to be determined later: - Optimizing System 6.0.x - Should I use Multifinder? - Working with System 7.x - How to choose between System 6 and 7 - Networking, esp. LocalTalk vs. Ethernet cards/adapters - Silence is golden -- running a floppy-only Plus - Finding and using a modem, esp. which brands are good and which are not particularly Mac friendly - Word processing, email, and Web apps that work well - Adding or replacing your ancient hard drive - Can you really justify buying an accelerator? - Where to find a replacement battery - How to get inside and bump RAM to 4 MB (if necessary) The goal is a series of five daily articles covering this class of machines, followed by a week long look at the 16 MHz compacts (SE/30, Classic II, Color Classic), and then a week covering the '030-based modular Macs. Would appreciate any feedback from the Compact Macs and System 6 lists on these and other issues as we prepare to push the Plus, SE, and Classic next week. I'm especially rusty on System 6. Looking forward to your input.
