The Mac system software loads a different version of the .Sony floppy driver depending on whether a Mac has a SWIM chip or an IWM (ie whether the Mac is capable of using an FDHD Superdrive or not). The SWIM and IWM identify floppy drives in a different way which is why Apple say that a Superdrive capable Mac should not be able to use an external 400K floppy or an HD20 floppy port drive. Do you use the 400K floppy drive solely with a disk image utility or do you perform other operations on the disks? Do 400K floppies appear normally on the desktop? What happens if you eject a floppy so that it is ghosted on the desktop (not permanent eject) and insert a second floppy? According to the docs for Apple's Disk Copy 4.1, it does not use the standard .Sony driver and loads its own version, so I can imagine that might fix something. Presumably Disk Copy 4.2 also uses a non-standard .Sony driver. How do you fit a 400K mechanism into an 800K 3.5" external case? The 400K mechanism is about two inches tall which is about the same height as an Apple 3.5 Drive case.
