Just a guess: Marshall's ISP has a spam filter. Rather than blocking the
spam, it tags possible spam and leaves it to Marshall to make the final
decision. When Marshall replied, the ISP-appended tag was included in
the response subject line. One of my ISPs does the same thing, although
it uses a different tag. I much prefer this form of spam filtering to
having the mail blocked at the ISP based on criteria over which I have
no control.
