One of the problems on the SE/30 that I'm >going to try to fix is a checkerboard display and an "automatic" >shutdown and restart cycle. So if I have to dig down in this, and I >never have in a compact before, I will discharge myself and the CRT. > >dan_A > I would check the 5V supply to the logic board. In my experience the checkerboard pattern is usually a RAM problem (poorly seated/bad RAM/dirty socket or contacts) and the auto-restart thing is usually marginal voltage from the supply. But I imagine that low voltage could simulate the faulty RAM symptoms, so I'd check to see that the motherboard is actually getting a good 5V from the power supply.
