Lately I power-up my Mac 512ke only rarely, and the other day when I turned it on, the modem's lights lit up as if I had just obtained a connection with a remote server. Strange! I just checked it, and it does the same thing.
Even disconnecting the power cord from the modem did not alleviate the problem, and the modem had a sound coming from it, though quite muffled, that it was trying to connect. Leaving the modem power cord disconnected, turning the Mac's power switch off turned off the modem's lights and the sound. Powering the Mac 512ke back on turned the modem back on too--without the modem power cord!!!! The modem is a 14.4 M1932ZDX MultiTech modem. The lights that come on are the CD, 19, and TR lights on the front panel. I will be sad if there is something wrong with the modem, since it matches the color of the 512ke so nicely!! But it may be a short in the modem cable. Any educated guesses out there? Kenneth Smith -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
