Hi all,

Many thanks to all who offered opinions and reviewed what they have actually
done to their units in the past. Even if I can't make it silent I think that
I'll be able to get it pretty quite.

I've realised that probably where I live in South Australia a classic would
be OK for about a third of the year without a fan. But when it gets to 45
degrees C then I guess not. I think that given my desire to "go silent" I'll
probably end up doing the some of the following:

1. Cut a template and drill (neatly and in pattern) alot holes on both on
both sides of the moulded in "handle". I'm thinking something vaguely imac
here.
2. Fit a bypass (i.e. on/off) switch to a newer, isolated fan. That should
cost about $2 in parts. So I've got the cooling capacity if I need it....
3. I could fit a newer higher capacity fan and simply run some diodes in
series on the positive lead to the fan and this would cut down the voltage
and lower the speed and therefore noise. I'm guessing that if Apple
engineers were worried about cooling then the classic came in a worse case
senario configuration. Running without a HD should lower the load on the
P.Supply and produce less heat. So with a lower voltage, more efficient fan
my fire insurance should be OK!

Of course all of these are really simple solutions. Not aggressive enough to
my mind, so have a look at an idea that came to me today @:

http://www.txc.net.au/~tyrone/index.htm

Now this Airconditioned solution is just in it's early stages but I'm sure
that with a little time and thought I can scrub it up into a more elegant
solution. Some of the benefits of this solution include:

1. No holes cut into Mac Case. Everything is nice and factory.
2. It's expensive - so it's gotta be good?
3. No worries about getting too close to any high voltage stuff.
4. A refreshing breeze will issue forth from the floppy disk opening
5. It can be rigged to run hot if needed. Very useful for those arctic
classic mac users.
6. Flexible - will work with and without a fan!
7. OS .01 - 7.5.x compatible. It may even work with later models.
8. If incoming air is properly filtered should keep Mac dust free inside.

Really I'm surprised this mod hasn't appeared before.

Anyway I'd once again like to thank all those that responded to my last 2
questions. I've been a bit of a lurker for some years on and off with this
list and haven't really made any contributions for some years. So here's my
bit today.

Cheers,

Tyrone

Flat out being relaxed.
