Yo compacters everywhere,

Our macotaku <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> askz:

<<I have one right here at the moment which I'm scanning for a friend of
mine, it belongs to him so I thought a PDF would be better then nothing
and then I found that one Macworld on eBay and did the buy it now. Anyone
any ideas how to best preserve it?>>

Yup. First, don't freeze it. Do keep it away from light and nasty air. You
will want to contact a (very) high end picture frame shop or a university
library. They will refer you to a "conservator", a specialist in document
preservation. From there, it is a Visa card exercise. Longevity costs
money. How long do you want your zine to last? And, yup, owning a picture
frame shop is one of those things I used to do among my (to) many careers.
Bye the waye, your zine will make a very fine display over your Macs if
properly framed. JUST DO IT!

The -p's advice about keeping your zine away from plastics is spot on for
the correct reason. For preservation, even "acid free" or "acid
neutralized" products won't do much much better than five years. Only
museum grade 100 percent rag cotton products meet the conservator's
standards.

If the goal is to impress Mac people (I am already impressed) for maybe a
couple of decades, just keep it in the dark in cool moderately dry clean
air. Don't touch it except for proper high hallowed rituals amongst true
Mac believers.

And I hereby cast my vote that discussion of a first edition of Macworld is
indeed on topic here. BIG TIME! It's just as, if not more on topic than The
Dead Mac Scrolls.

Bill
