You really need a boot floppy with some utilities to begin to deal with this sort of thing. Booting with a floppy will show if it's a hardware or HD software problem. Assuming it boots OK from the floppy, which eliminates hardware problem, first thing I would do is run Virex 3.83 on it. Disenfectant is missing some of the old Mac virus. Next I would run Disk First Aid on it. Then I would zap the PRAM. Then I would see if the 6.0.8 on the HD behaves better with nothing in the System Folder except the System and the Finder.
