Strangely enough the classic I purchased also for $15 from a "Tip Shop" also displayed the flashing question mark. Not having a genuine MAC boot disk I put a Win98 boot disk in. The disk ejected as you would imagine and it proceeded to boot from the hard drive. I replaced the battery and it has not faulted since.
