I'm not familiar with the Sonic card for the SE but Sonic stuff generally was good and the same chipset was adopted by Apple for their own built-in ethernet in the Quadra/early PPC era. The final driver is available at Sonic's legacy ftp site at ftp://ftp.sonicsys.com/pub/software/unsupported/ -- without downloading it I can't tell you if it works with System 6 but earlier versions definitely did. If you get stuck, mail me off list -- I have most of the Sonic driver distributions either at home or at work. This card is very likely to work with Apple's own ethernet driver distributions (eg Network Software Installer 1.4.x) but if your card has more cache on board you'll be better off with the manufacturer's own driver.
Of course, once you've got ethernet working and your SE connecting to a University network, you'll have no excuse for not running a web server on it... (Make sure that the cooling fan is in good condition and that the analog board voltages are within bounds [when cold and hot] before trying to run it 365/24/7.)
