But do any of those work well under System 6, on an SE? I can't find a browser that does. . . :(

All of those should, they do for me on my Classic and Plus. There really is no decent web browser that works, but there are some that will do it. By far my favorite way of surfing on there is to telnet/ssh into one of my Linux boxes, which gives me access to just about anything I could want.
Yeah, not practical, but it works :)
