You compacters everywhere: A week or so ago, our Mark Falzon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asked:
<<I would like to run the computer's (SE/30s) from a deep cycle marine battery connected to a DC to AC power inverter. Will this work? Anyone have any idea how long the battery will last?>> It'll work fine. The 45 or so watts to run an SE/30 run through a decent inverter will be using power from the battery at no greater than 100 watts at the very outside. Assuming your are using a decent deep cycle battery, say a #27 rated at maybe 95 amp/hours and you are going to run it between 90 and 50 percent of charge, you'll get a coupla hours out of it. If you are using gel cell or AMD deep cycle batteries of the same size, you can run 'em from 90 to 10 percent of charge and go longer. Get a 4D or 8D battery and go for a long time. Boats run refrigeration from these hernia boxes. To avoid murdering your batteries, be careful to use a proper multiple stage battery charger. Gel cell and AMD batteries require different charging voltages than a lead acid wet battery. Decent deep cycle batteries and a proper charger are not cheap. They never ever but no never come from an auto parts or hardware store. NEVER! History here. The SE/30 was widely used by fire departments and others in the hazardous materials response business in the late eighties. We had a real time mapping program called CAMEO (Computer Aided Management of Emergency Operations) to project the release plumes of whatever methylethyldeath was at issue. The program was so sophisticated for its time that it could only be run on a Mac. Apple, bless their little apples, warrantied those little SE/30s in use by emergency responders while on the run in moving emergency reponse vehicles. They ran on every kind of crappy vehicle and portable generator known with most any kind of inverter connected. To these SE/30s, you could connect a suite of meterological sensors to refine the plume projection. Good fun! In a follow-on, Mark comments: <<I have never used a set-up like this and am anxious for any helpful input.>> Go find the older members of the hazarous materials team from your local fire department. They may know of what I speak. They may even have their SE/30 stuffed in a closet somewhere. You are on the right track using a Mac proven in the field for this kind of thing.
