Good call. I forgot about that. Perhaps I was thinking of a PC reading mac disk images.

Sorry John, I think that's impossible. Apple got the additional 40k over 360k pc disks by hacking the sony drive design. Basically, they used a variable speed motor to cram more data onto the outer rim of the disk by spinning the drive more slowly when the head read the outer tracks. This scheme was continued with 800k siks to give an 80k gain over pc 720k disks. So the simple amswer is that pc's cannot read or write 400 or 800k disks. The circuitry just isn't there.
