Are there any IMAP clients that are capable of leaving mail on the server?

Later versions of Eudora do IMAP. I'm not sure if there is a 68K version but it's well worth another visit.

Mulberry is an IMAP only mailer. It's commercial but reasonably priced. Definitely 68K. The interface is a little strange but very fast once you get used to it.

Later versions of Outlook Express do IMAP. Check Gamba's pages for links to old distributions of Internet Explorer 4 at http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/browsers.html.
