You have to be picky about what thrift stores you shop. Some thrift stores
that have good prices on one kind of item have unbelieveable prices on
another.

I fortunately live on a stretch of highway that is over 20 straight miles of
pure city and there are numerous thrift stores every couple miles. Just
within a five minute drive of my apartment building, either direction, I
have three Value Villages (which are sometimes good for finding vintage
computer stuff), two Salvation Armys (one is right across the street), and
five or six mom-and-pop type thrift shops. Hoping not to tread too far
off-topic, one of those Value Villages recently had a complete Amiga 500
computer system in it's original box with all disks and manuals for $10.
But as far as computer hardware goes, I have to say that Salvation Army is
my least-favorite as they never seem to have anything interesting, and what
they do have is overpriced.

Anyway, swinging back to topic, I've found my favorite place for used,
vintage computer hardware is a place called "Shop 'n Save" which is one of
the ones real close to me. They always have *great* prices on used computer
hardware (and software, for that matter) but seem to have more unreasonably
priced clothing. Most of their hardware isn't more than $3.99 tops and
usually less.

While I have yet to see a compact Mac system there, just last time they had
a complete Macintosh Centris 610 for $2.99.

But my all-time greatest find there was a fully-functional, mint-looking
Apple Personal LaserWriter printer (even had a non-depleted toner
cartridge!) for just $3. Since then, it's been hooked up to my Classic II
(see? I'm on-topic!)and I still haven't needed to replace the toner
cartridge. Now I have no idea what one of these printers might be worth
these days, but I'd be willing to bet it's a bit more than $3!
