Sherman, Sean,

Actually, there are "hubs" that you use with LocalTalk systems. Actually,
they require PhoneNet (Farallon's style of LocalTalk networking utilizing
RJ11 jacks and phone cords instead of the shielded din style cables).

There are two products I'm aware of that provide this function. One is the
Tribe Computer Works TribeStar. That provides a star topology switch to
16/24 localtalk devices. The unit also has an ethernet port (AUI) allowing
the routing of traffic to an ethernet segment (or backbone or whatever).
Thats all I know about those other than they're nearly impossible to find.

Alternatively, there's the Farallon StarController. They're a hub, providing
either 12 or 24 localtalk devices, with a true star topology. It also
monitors the network segments (devices, etc.) and when it detects a problem,
it'll isolate that segment from the rest of the network and alert you
visually with the LED status indicators on the unit. I've got 6 of these
units in my home and they work great! They're cheap and easy to find but
typically come w/o the power adapters and the software is long gone. For
LocalTalk/Ethernet connectivity, I'm using a Cayman GatorBox CS. Works
flawlessly.

Good luck making your own. I can't see why as you can pick these units up
for under $5.00 each.

Keep us posted.
