The half-height issue CAN be resolved by making your own spacers for the
rear holes. I always just aligned the drive straight and cranked down the
two screws that fit. Barring any MAJOR jostling, the drive should  stay
perpendicular.

That new drive could be formatted with a driver the Mac doesn't care for.

The easy solution is to back up the info on it and reinitialize it with an
accepted Apple Driver.
