IIRC, the Classic's sound system is similar to that in other compacts (exc. the 
SE/30). There's a Sony sound chip that does the heavy lifting,
and a simple amplifier, on the analog(ue) board, that drives the speaker and headphone 
jack. The internal speaker is a high-impedance beast
(32 ohms, instead of the more common 8), so the amplifier actually drives both.

I've had a Classic analog board sitting on my bench for a year now; I've been 
intending to trace it out "one of these days." Maybe your
question will get me to actually do it, at least partially.

I'll post again if/when I have new info.
