What program did you use to format the drive? Did you format it on the Classic II?
I have an external 2 gigabyte drive on my Classic II and all I did (in the following order) was: buy the drive, format it with a MicroNet SCSI utility (*not* Apple's SC HD Setup) and reboot. Works like a charm and is recognized as a 2 gig drive. Have had no problems in the year I've been working with it. You might want to try a third-party formatter. Make sure the drive is terminated correctly. What OS are you running?
