Frys sells a product called "Flux Off" in an aerosol can. It will take stuff off of circuit boards nicely, including residual solder flux (:-). Other stores which are well If you use the two soldering pencil method (as popularized by Marc Schrier's Clock Chipping Homepage), it's really easy to non-destructively remove those old surface mount caps.
A 15 Watt grounded soldering pencil is less than $10 at Radio Shack and perfect for the surface mount capacitor and resistor work.
