I have replaced any caps on my Classic/Plus/512/128 Compacts yet, but it's on my list. I routinely replace swollen caps on modern PeeCee motherboards and it's no big deal. I have a Hakko desolder station, a Hakko solder station and a hot air SMD rework station. All purchased on ebay for a fraction of original cost. A few good bench tools make almost any board level repair job we will encounter in a compact within reach. It is really fun to take a dead machine and make it whole again with a few bucks in components.

Replacing caps is one of the easier and more enjoyable soldering jobs on the analogue boards. You want difficult, try replacing a transistor riveted to a heat sink, soldered into the board with a twist. I have a vacuum pump which makes de-soldering easy. So easy, if you're not careful the Cap will just fall out. Caps usually have long leads so it makes sticking them through the board easy and they are usually pretty big which means they are easy to handle and have a lot of free space surrounding them to work. Then re-solder. The thing about caps is, where there's one bad one, there are likely many others or soon will be if they are all the originals. If you had a Mac Plus or earlier, you would be doing yourself a real disservice not to replace all of them at once -- even when they were new, as they were woefully underrated for the job required. If you don't replace a cap that is likely to fail (and at this point in your Classic's life they are), when it does, it will most likely bring down something else harder to fix in the process. Don't be afraid of this job -- it can actually be relaxing. Also, it would be very hard to cause additional damage. Hopefully you'd be aware enough not to leave excess solder on the board to short something out. That's about the worst that could happen. Good luck.
