In my opinion the optical mouse is a big improvement over the standard mechancical gunk-attractor. But of course, you do need the correct mouse pad, which has a fine grid pattern of lines on it. The same type of mouse pad was used on many old Sun systems. I know for a fact that you can make a photocopy of the mouse pad and it works like the real thing, but of course is not as durable. I can look to see if I have a pad to photocopy for you; I know I'm not willing to sell the pad just by itself.
