How do I upgrade a Mac SE from 2M to 4M RAM? I've fitted the two extra SIMMs, but the machine still runs with 2M.
You have to tell the SE that you want to use all four banks of memory. I don't have a board handy, so I don't know if it's R9 or R15 or what, but it's printed on the board. Look at the slid-out board from the connector side, there is either a resistor with 2/4MB printed above it (earlier boards) or a pin arrangement with a jumper marked the same way (newer boards) in the left portion of the board near your edge. You don't have to desolder the resistor, just take a wire cutter and cut one leg of the resistor about at the middle and bend the beast gently aside for a millimeter or two; this way you are quite easy if you want to go the way back to a 2MB machine. On the jumpered board, your choice is obvious.
