TWO not TOO!
I have been sitting at this Mac for TOO long... Bye for now. Don

Many hard drive problems are caused by heat. In fact our Mac Plus
computers at Illinois Bell had many failures until we did TWO things.
1. We added the Kensington System Savers to all of the Macs, and
2. We instructed the staff to properly shut down their computers at
the end of each work day.

Definitely agree. The best ones, in my opinion are
either the Conner drives or the Quantums marked ©1990
next to the Apple logo on the sticker. Many also say
EPROM on them somewhere. I've found the big factor
with deciding between Conner and Quantum 40MB drives
is whether or not the machine or enclosure needs an
LED (the Quantums have pins for it and I have yet to
find them on Conners).
The ones that seem to have the worst reliability are
40MB and 80MB internal Quantums (not the great big
5.25" drives, but the 3.5" ones). I had two fail in a
one year period when I only dealt with about five of
those drives.

Some confusion here...
HD20 has become a generic term. HD meaning Hard
Drive. The first
were set up for the Mac 512 that did not have a SCSI
port (except for
third party upgrades)
they operate just like a large external floppy
drive. You could use
one with a Plus but it would not make sense.
The external hard drives provided for the Mac Plus
and beyond were
called the 20SC, 40SC, 80SC, and 160SC
These are all SCSI drives. The earlier external hard
drives inside
the enclosure were expensive and huge for the 80 and
160 MB versions.
I have a defunct 1987 80MB Apple hard drive that
measures (not
including the enclosure) : 5.5" Wide, 8" Long and
1.5" High.
They also used up 40 watts of power and got hot.
The mounting bracket inside the enclosure will mount
the huge drives
or the smaller foot-print newer drives.
The 1990s drives are more reliable and do not use so
much power.
As soon as my son returns my digital camera I will
photo the older
and newer 80MB SCSI drives next to each other for
those who have not
seen them.
The older SCSI drives (1980s) weigh 3.5 pounds
without an enclosure.
The newer SCSI drives (1990s) weigh about 13 ounces
without an
enclosure.
