Just for the record, one more favourable report on the dishwasher method...
After having produced crackling noises and weakening system sounds for some
weeks, my Classic II went completely mute.
The motherboard had the tell tale gooey stains, which disappeared after one
cycle in the dishwasher using normal dishwasher detergent.
Yesterday, after a week of drying I reassembled and started up the computer,
and guess what, the familiar start-up dong was back, plus the other system
sounds full strength like before.
