The goals are twofold:

1) Encourage the placement of non-name-conflicting gnu tools
    into /usr/bin.  In addition, encourage conflicting tools to
    appear in /usr/bin with the "g" prefix.  This will enable the
    majority of the open source software out there to "just compile
    and work" on Solaris.

2) Provide a simple mechanism to allow one to prefer the gnu
    version of conflicting commands.  Thus by setting one's path
    appropriately, users can select whether their cmds have
    a Solaris (xpg3), xpg4, xpg6 or GNU/FSF personality.  This is
    a useful technique for porting software written by those who
    feel "all the world's a Linux distro".
