Unfortunately this isn't the right forum. Fortunately, I can provide you with a fairly good answer. First, the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Au_file_format Second, the OpenGroup's documentation on it: http://www.opengroup.org/public/pubs/external/auformat.html Finally, I have never heard of any licensing being required for the .au file format. It has always been a cross-platform open standard file format as far as I know, and no royalties are necessary to use it.
