this seems to be related to a bug in the latest libXrandr. This
appends to me on a totally  different config (ATI drivers, Intel Proc,
Xgl, Beryl, KDE, Gentoo).

Downgrading all packages related to xrandr (randrproto-1.1.2 /
libXrandr-1.1.1 / xrandr-1.0.2) fixes the problem. See
