In one of my other replies on this thread I've identified a light at the end of the tunnel. Here's hoping someone codes up something like that for Google's summer-of-code, or a grad student does it to get an A, or some up-and-coming superstar does it in a weekend just to hone his skills a bit more. :-) Then all we'll need to do is to get the two look-alike-work-alike applets to know enough about each other to defer to the other one if/when compiz or metacity are running.
