I just updated OpenOffice.org and Compiz from lucid-proposed. It dit NOT fix the bug. Strangely, OpenOffice now covers the lower panel, and has the right size, but is shifted down so the upper panel is visible. Previously, both panels were visible, and the "full screen" window was correspondingly smaller.
