All of this will go away once 0.9 hits. What's happening here is that applications are requesting to create _absurdly_ large windows which happen to be larger than the maximum texture size _hardware_ limit that your graphics card has. I believe ubuntu has patched compiz such that it will freak out and kick you back to metacity rather than attempting to crash your graphics hardware by creating huge textures out of those huge windows.
Compiz 0.9 will support tiled texturing, so the window will still appear, it will just span over multiple textures (although this will not be noticeable to the user). You'll get Compiz 0.9 as soon as all the Unity-Compiz related stuff hits ubuntu.
