After researching this I disovered the enabling the "Copy to texture" should 
work around the 2048 pixel limit for compiz.
It would be good if this was enabled by default. However, after installing 
CompizConfig Settings Manager and enabling the copytex plugin a different 
behaviour is observed: the backgournd is filled with random junk.

After spend some hours stepping through the copytex.cpp code I've
managed to put together a patch that fixes this problem.

Really there are two things that need to be done:
  1. Enable the "Copy to texture" plugin by default
  2. Apply the patch to the copytex.cpp plugin.
